Sungrow Powers UK’s Largest Battery Storage Project Thorpe Marsh

London, United Kingdom, November 20, 2025Sungrow is proud to share its role as the technology provider for the 1.4GW/3.1GWh Thorpe Marsh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), developed by Fidra Energy.

A Project with national significance

The UK has already made major advancements in the battery storage industry in 2025, with 7.86 GW / 11.8 GWh of grid-scale battery storage now operational, and almost 2 GW / 3.5 GWh added in the first ten months of 2025 alone - a 36% year-on-year increase. In keeping with this positive trend, the Thorpe Marsh project will be the UK’s largest battery project and one of the world’s most ambitious standalone battery projects.

As technology provider, Sungrow will supply units of its PowerTitan 2.0 BESS with 1.6GW / 3.3GWh of battery capacity, enough to power over 785,000 homes annually and capable of exporting in excess of 2,000 GWh per year. Adding capacity equivalent to more than 20% of today’s entire UK battery fleet, the project represents a pivotal moment in the region’s path toward energy resilience.

“This is a landmark moment for the UK’s energy transition and for the global energy storage industry,” said James Li, Director ESS Europe at Sungrow. “We are proud to support Fidra Energy and all partners in delivering a project that will set new standards for scale and performance. Thorpe Marsh demonstrates how cutting-edge battery technology can accelerate the shift to a cleaner, more resilient power system. Our team’s commitment to provide the utmost levels of support to our partners is the pinnacle of our strategy towards paving the road to a sustainable future.”

Flexible solutions to meet unprecedented scale

PowerTitan 2.0 is a fully liquid-cooled, highly modular solution engineered for utility-scale applications. Designed to maximize efficiency and reliability while simplifying installation, PowerTitan 2.0 offers the flexibility required to deliver consistent performance at the unprecedented scale of the Thorpe Marsh project.

“Sungrow has demonstrated that it will be an excellent partner, and we look forward to working with them to support our UK and European growth ambitions.”
Says Chris Elder, Chief Executive Officer at Fidra Energy.

Major investment underpins Thorpe Marsh potential
The project secured approximately £750 million in investment, and was backed by EIG, the UK National Wealth Fund, and a syndicate of international lenders including Natwest, Santander CIB, Deutsche Bank AG, Societe Generale, and Standard Chartered Bank etc. Construction has started and commissioning will commence in mid-2027.

Thorpe Marsh also benefits from long-term offtake agreements with EDF, Octopus Energy, and Statkraft, covering around 80% of its capacity, alongside a 15-year capacity market award from the UK Government starting in 2028. Together, these arrangements provide a stable revenue foundation for one of the most ambitious storage facilities ever financed.

Driving UK energy storage ambitions beyond Thorpe Marsh
Alongside the Thorpe Marsh project, Sungrow will also supply its innovative solutions to the West Burton C 500MW/1.1GWh ESS project. The latter is supported by EIG and the National Wealth Fund and will be also developed by Fidra Energy.

As the UK accelerates toward its 2035 net zero power goal, large-scale battery projects like Thorpe Marsh are essential to integrating renewable generation, smoothing intermittency, and supporting grid stability. From the UK to
Belgium to Ireland to the Netherlands and Finland, Sungrow is committed to advancing cutting-edge energy storage that enables the clean power transition across Europe and beyond — for all.
